Change Bristol’s State of Mind—How can we better support everyone’s mental health?
Join our place-based approach to addressing the mental health crisis by understanding what makes us happy.
Bristol has one of the highest suicide rates in the UK, ranking fourth outside of the core cities.
This unique pilot brings together businesses, institutions, and communities to explore what makes us happy and what keeps us happy and how that varies by culture, generation, gender, disability, and socio-economic background.
Born from challenges faced by the Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board, the Bristol State of Mind initiative emerged from a city-wide conversation asking, “Who is responsible for our mental health?” In September 2024, in partnership with Burges Salmon, Triodos Bank, Talk Club, and Mind, the conversation explored this One Question from differing perspectives, setting the foundation for this pioneering programme.
You can download our critical thinking and report following the conversation here.
Bristol will be the first region to pilot this place-based initiative to prevent poor mental health. Over the next three years, the initiative will test and evaluate tailored strategies, from improving our understanding of mental health to developing new community initiatives, transforming businesses, changing how we think and behave, and shifting policies.
